Pownal is geographically located in the southwest corner of Vermont bordering Massachusetts to the south and New York to the west. It is a beautiful community with both the Taconic Mountains running through it and the Green Mountains bordering to the east. Pownal is a rural community and the gateway to Vermont. Pownal Elementary School is a kindergarten through sixth grade facility with a population that averages about 300 students. A faculty and staff of 60 serve the youngsters. Our curricula are aligned with the Vermont Framework of Standards and Grade Level Expectations. Currently used instructional texts and materials are new within the last 6 years. Our Technology Lab has computers that were all purchased in the 2004-2005 school year and the plan is to update the lab every three years. The school has a colorful environment and a warm and friendly climate. As a member of the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union, Pownal students move from PES to Mount Anthony Union Middle School and then on to Mount Anthony Union High School. We have a supportive school board and SVSU administrators. The Parent Teachers Group is a very active organization working with teachers to provide resources and enriched opportunities for our children. Many volunteers (parents, Williams College students, Mount Anthony Union High School students, Career Development Center students, and community elders) offer their time to assist children in learning.
